Anamnesis: a foal that showed a whitish coloration accompanied by abundant secretion on the left eye was examined. Clinical and laboratory findings: ophthalmological examination revealed signs of melting ulcer, a complication that is characterized by progressive liquefaction of the corneal stroma. Culture isolation revealed positive growing of Flavobacterium sp and Gram negative rods. Treatment approaches: several keratectomies and tarsorrhaphies were made accompanied by an exhaustive treatment with antiproteinases, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic. The therapy of this patient was focus on reducing the inflammatory response, eliminating the infective organisms in the damaged cornea, and promoting healing of the epithelial surface. Ulcer was resolved at 27th day of hospitalization and 3 months later the foal showed complete recovery of vision. |
